Others developed an appreciation for visual arts that will last their lifetimes.
Now 89, Smith remembers growing up in Western Canada before his father lost his fortune in the 1929 stock market crash. The comfortable family home in Vancouver had to be sold. His parents were originally from Ontario, so the Smiths headed back east to Toronto.
