Inco is the world’s second largest producer of nickel. In October 2006, Brazil’s CVRD acquired the nickel giant with the intention of continuing Inco’s aggressive growth strategy. CVRD is the largest diversified mining company in the Americas. It is the world leader in iron ore production. The 39 thousand CVRD employees and the 12 thousand from Inco combined form one of the three largest diversified mineral companies in the world with an even greater capacity to compete globally through optimization of technology and sharing of knowledge.
The new affiliated company will operate as CVRD Inco Limited. Its world-class mineral reserve and resource base is among the best in the global nickel industry. The company is also an important producer of copper, cobalt and precious and platinum-group metals and a major producer of specialty nickel-based products.
CVRD Inco Limited’s principal mines and processing operations are located in the Sudbury area, in Ontario, in Thompson, Manitoba, and, through a subsidiary PT International Nickel Indonesia Tbk (PT Inco), on the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. CVRD Inco Limited has additional wholly owned metals refineries at Port Colborne, Ontario, and in the United Kingdom at Clydach, Wales, and Acton, England.
