A lifelong resident of Feronia, Redbridge and primarily North Bay, Patrick J. Robinson has spent nearly eight decades touching the lives of countless individuals through his unwavering dedication to hockey, golf, volunteerism and community advocacy.
Robinson is this year’s recipient of the BayToday Community Builders Award in the Sports and Recreation category, an honour that recognizes not only his extensive contributions on the rink, but his exceptional spirit of perseverance and community leadership.
Robinson’s love of sport took root early on, growing up in the small communities surrounding North Bay, where he and his brothers organized local shinny games and tournaments.
Without formal leagues, it was their energy and passion that created the early seeds of organized play.
“My love for hockey started in those early days in Feronia. We didn’t have much, but we had each other, a sheet of ice and the drive to get a game going. Those are some of my best memories,” Robinson shared.
"I played until I was over 70. I would have been playing longer, but my health isn’t what it used to be,” shared Robinson.
That passion carried into adulthood, where Robinson became a foundational force in the North Bay sports community.
One of his proudest achievements was founding and running the West Ferris Atoms Tournament, which drew teams from across the province and became a major event for minor hockey.
For nearly 30 years, Robinson worked tirelessly to ensure the tournament’s success, even being recognized with a trophy displayed in the arena honouring his efforts.
But Robinson’s impact reaches far beyond the rink.
Despite facing enormous personal health challenges, surviving cancer multiple times and undergoing two kidney transplants, Robinson has remained a tireless community volunteer.
He played a crucial role in founding the North Bay branch of the Kidney Foundation, raising both funds and awareness for those living with kidney disease.
He also helped establish the Renal Committee to support dialysis patients locally and volunteered at the Day Centre, helping transport fellow patients for treatment.
His service extends to the waterfront as well, where he became one of the most recognizable faces at the Heritage Railway and Carousel Company, volunteering countless hours between 2004 and 2023 to ensure families could continue to enjoy these beloved community attractions.
When reflecting on his life’s work, Robinson’s humility shines through.
"I've worked with many people over my time involved with volunteering for hockey and other things," Robinson said.
"There are other people that deserve it just as much, or maybe more, but I certainly appreciate the nomination," he humbly added.
Robinson and his devoted wife, to whom he has been married for nearly 60 years, raised two children together, building a family rooted in resilience, compassion and community spirit.
"This award means a lot to me because it indicates that I was appreciated for the work I did,” shared Robinson.
His community, friends and family, including those who nominated him, speak with unanimous respect and gratitude for the example he has set.
This award is presented to an individual or group who has contributed to the strength of a sport in the community by inspiring others, establishing new opportunities or mentoring fellow athletes.
Congratulations, Patrick!
