Chidi Nwene is a strong and inspiring leader in the Guelph community.

Nwene is the founder and president of the African Canadian Initiative (ACI), an organization that helps support and empower African Canadians, especially newcomers. As a first-generation African Canadian himself, Nwene knows firsthand the challenges many people face when trying to settle in a new country.

ACI provides important resources like financial guidance, support for education and career advancement opportunities. These services open doors for many families and individuals to build stronger, more secure futures.

In addition to leading ACI, Nwene is an environmental specialist, social justice advocate, community organizer and business development associate. Currently, he works with World Renew as a Community Engagement Specialist, helping fight global poverty and improve people’s economic well-being and health around the world.

Through these tireless efforts, Nwene has made a lasting impact on both local and international communities. His work in helping people grow financially and socially makes him an outstanding choice for this year’s GuelphToday Community Builders Award for Economic Development.

“I am deeply honored and humbled to be a recipient of a Community Builders Award,” Nwene said. “Guelph has been my home for the past 15 years. During this time, I’ve had the privilege of serving on the City of Guelph committee, as well as on several boards and grassroots organizations focused on making a positive impact in our community.”

His work has also included partnerships with the county on affordable housing initiatives, collaboration with Habitat for Humanity Guelph, the Rotary Club of Guelph and the Guelph Police Service to train new officers in community policing and cultural diversity.

Moreover, Nwene started a local community initiative called “On the Streets of Guelph”, where he meets with small business owners and social organizations to promote growth, support entrepreneurship and encourage people from all walks of life.

“My passion lies in serving and supporting diverse community groups and small businesses across our city,” he shared.

Nwene’s passion for helping others and his clear commitment to building economic strength in the community make him a true leader. His work is changing lives by providing people with the tools and support they need to succeed.

The Economic Development award recognizes individuals or groups who have significantly enhanced the economic prosperity of the community through impactful contributions.

Congratulations, Chidi!

This award is proudly sponsored by the City of Guelph.
