Paul Barna is a distinguished musician and educator whose contributions have left an indelible mark on our local music community.

As a seasoned violinist and violist, he has performed with esteemed ensembles, including the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony and Burlington Symphony Orchestra, where he currently serves as Principal Second violin.

A graduate of the Glenn Gould School of Music, he has collaborated with renowned artists such as Jeremy Dutcher and The Arkells, as well as participated in high-profile performances at events like the JUNO Awards and Pan Am Games.

Although he takes pride in his personal achievements, his true joy comes from teaching and guiding other students in their musical journey.

He runs the Paul Barna Music Studio, where he has been teaching for over 10 years. He founded and directs the Burlington Chamber Sinfonia, an ensemble that gives advanced students the chance to perform solo pieces with a group. He is also a faculty member at the Burlington Suzuki School of Music.

Many of his students have won awards and hold leadership roles in youth orchestras across Ontario.

His passion for mentorship and music make Barna a worthy recipient of a Community Builders Award for Education.

“It was very humbling to hear about this,” Barna said. “It’s rewarding to know that your work is recognized. It’s also rewarding to be able to do what I love in a community that I love.”

“This is just the cherry on top,” he added.

Barna has also worked with several youth orchestras and music programs, including the Hamilton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Oakville Symphony Youth Orchestra, and Mississauga Youth Orchestra.

“It’s nice to know that what you’re doing is having an impactful meaning on other people’s lives. I really just want to help students and youth succeed and accomplish their goals,” he said.

“Working with keen, young minds can be very demanding—in a positive way—but I thrive in that type of environment. I try to encourage my students to excel and become better versions of themselves,” Barna shared.

Paul Barna’s dedication to music, teaching, and his community makes him a key figure in the Burlington and area music scene. Whether performing on stage, recording in a studio, or mentoring young musicians, he hopes to continue inspiring those around him.

The Education award honours a student, educator, administrator or education advocate who has significantly contributed to the advancement of education in the community. This may include an outstanding teacher who has profoundly influenced the lives of their students, an administrator who has pioneered the establishment of a specialized program or an advocate whose efforts have driven lasting positive change within our local schools.

Congratulations, Paul!
