Craig Nodwell is a passionate and dedicated coach, mentor and educator whose work has made a significant difference in the lives of students, staff and the community as a whole.

A teacher at Chippewa Secondary School, Nodwell is known as a truly community-minded individual who consistently looks for ways to involve students in meaningful, positive action.

Whether it's volunteering at the local food bank as a class, organizing winter carnivals at local elementary schools, or mentoring student ambassadors to become thoughtful global citizens, Nodwell leads by example.

His leadership and commitment make him an outstanding choice for this year’s BayToday Community Builders Award in Education.

“I don’t do any of the things that I do for recognition or awards but it’s nice to be recognized by the members of our community,” Nodwell said when he learned about his award win.

One of his most notable contributions is the organization of the Jack Lyons Memorial Hockey Tournament, a special community event that brings students, families and local supporters together.

“Craig Nodwell made this tournament happen two years in a row. It takes a huge amount of  leadership, dedication, commitment and time to organize an event like this,” said Lesley Lyons, Jack Lyon’s mother.

“Craig also maintained a vision that was about Jack with elements of the tournament, like presenting Jack Lyons Kindness awards to students throughout the course of the day in between games.”

“The Jack Lyons Memorial Hockey Tournament has raised over $50,000 so far. The proceeds went directly, in Jack's name, to One Kids Place to fund summer autism camps for children in our community,” she added.

Understanding the importance of reaching students early, Nodwell also developed the Future Ambassador program for grade eight students. The program introduces younger students to leadership and encourages them to take an active role in shaping the culture of their school.

Additionally, he is deeply involved in school sports. He has coached volleyball, led tournaments and supported athletic programs at many levels, including through work with OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations).

Nodwell is recognized as being a true role model. Through his actions, he demonstrates what it means to lead with heart and work with purpose.

“I’m super thankful for everyone’s kind words of support. I look forward to continuing to give back to the community,” he shared.

The Education award honours a student, educator, administrator or education advocate who has significantly contributed to the advancement of education in the community. This may include an outstanding teacher who has profoundly influenced the lives of their students, an administrator who has pioneered the establishment of a specialized program or an advocate whose efforts have driven lasting positive change within our local schools.

Congratulations, Craig!
