Community Builders Awards: This year’s Sports and Recreation Award winner is leading the charge for girls in lacrosse locally, nationally and beyond

Ryley Black is inspiring a new generation of athletes while making history in women’s box lacrosse

At just 16 years old, Ryley Black is already making an incredible impact in the world of sports.

A rising lacrosse star with a passion for her community, Black is this year’s recipient of the OrilliaMatters Community Builders Award in Sports and Recreation, a recognition that celebrates not just her accomplishments on the field but her role as a leader and advocate for the growth of girls' lacrosse in Canada.

Black’s journey in lacrosse began at a young age, thanks to her father, who introduced her to the sport.

“My passion for lacrosse started with my dad. He introduced me to the sport when I was young and has always pushed me to do my best. Both he and my mom have made so many sacrifices for my brother and me to succeed in sports and I’m incredibly grateful for their support,” Black said.

Over the past few years, Black has committed herself to developing her skills and competing at the highest levels.

She played for the Orillia Lady Kings and currently plays for Barrie Bombers, Empress Lacrossee and the Hill Academy balancing a demanding athletic schedule with school and life as a teenager.

Her dedication paid off in a big way in the summer of 2022 and 2023 when she helped Team Ontario win the U15 national championship and the U17 national championship, an achievement that marked a major milestone in her young career.

In 2022, Black was one of only four players in the province selected to represent Team Ontario Box Lacrosse and Field Lacrosse showcasing her versatility and elite skillset.

“Some of my proudest moments include winning two Ontario Championships in box lacrosse, representing Team Netherlands as a heritage player and the first-ever Women’s World Box Lacrosse Championships, and winning two national titles with Team Ontario,” Black reflects.

She has since gone on to compete on the international stage, including a tournament in New York, Pennsylvania and Maryland, where she played against some of the best athletes in the world.

Black’s impact goes far beyond the field.

She is a passionate advocate for increasing participation in girls’ box lacrosse, a sport traditionally dominated by boys.

This year Black has taken on a role as assistant coach to the U13 Orangeville girls box lacrosse team.

“I hope to continue playing lacrosse at a high level and use the sport as a way to earn my degree. I’m also aiming to stay involved in box lacrosse and try out for Team Canada the next time the World Championships come around,” Black shared, demonstrating her commitment to growing the sport and pursuing her dreams.

Black has developed the kind of self-discipline, time management and commitment that is rare in someone her age.

“I was honestly surprised and deeply honoured to receive this recognition,” Black shared. “What makes it even more meaningful is knowing that people I’ve never met have been following my journey and cheering me on.”

Black’s commitment to excellence in both athletics and academics culminated in a proud achievement: her commitment to St. Bonaventure University in New York.

“My proudest achievement overall is committing to St. Bonaventure University. That decision reflects both my athletic dedication and my focus on building a strong academic and professional future,” Black shared.

Her accomplishments have brought pride to her community and her dedication continues to open doors for others to follow.

“I want to sincerely thank everyone who has supported me along the way. I’m especially grateful to those who nominated me and believed in my journey as an athlete. It truly means a lot,” Black said, acknowledging the support that has helped her reach this point.

Congratulations, Ryley!
