Sports have the power to build confidence, teach teamwork and inspire a lifelong love of physical activity.
For many families, financial and social barriers can make participation difficult, but David Jones (better known as Coach David) is changing that reality in Burlington.
As the founder and CEO of Kids Play Sports, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing affordable and accessible sports programs for children from three-years-old to age 12, Coach David is ensuring that every child has the chance to experience the joy and benefits of sports.
"I had a difficult childhood and was diagnosed with ADHD, though back then, people didn’t really understand it. I was often labelled as a 'bad kid' or a 'troubled kid'. I struggled in programs, fitting in and finding my place. This program is the kind I wish existed for me when I was young. The coaching I needed — patient, understanding and flexible, with an individual approach for each child," Coach David shared.
His vision is simple yet powerful, to create an inclusive environment where all children, regardless of background or ability, feel welcome, supported and encouraged to reach their potential.
Coach David’s passion for youth development stems from his own journey as an athlete.
Born and raised in Burlington, he was a multi-sport athlete throughout high school, excelling in football, soccer, basketball, volleyball, badminton, wrestling and rugby.
His talent in rugby took him to the provincial and national levels, eventually leading to a semi-professional career in Scotland.
Later, he brought his expertise back home, coaching junior girls’ and boys’ rugby teams and using his experiences to inspire the next generation.
"Sports were a lifeline for me. Without them, I likely wouldn’t have graduated high school or university. Now, I see how essential sports are for mental health, confidence and helping kids find their place in the world," said Coach David.
Through Kids Play Sports, Coach David and his dedicated team of coaches are shaping young athletes, not just in skill, but in character, teamwork and personal growth.
The organization offers a variety of programs, including basketball, soccer, flag football, volleyball and multi-sport camps, all designed to emphasize fun, skill-building and an active lifestyle.
Beyond providing high-quality coaching, accessibility and inclusion are at the heart of Kids Play Sports’ mission.
By offering affordable fees and financial assistance, Coach David ensures that cost is never a barrier for children who want to participate.
"We want to grow, but not just for the sake of being bigger. We want to touch more lives. The more cities we’re in, the more positive impact we can have. So, while we aim to grow, we’ll do it in a smart and thoughtful way," Coach David explained.
His commitment to inclusivity extends beyond financial support, his coaching philosophy welcomes children of all abilities, meeting them where they are and ensuring they feel valued and capable.
"Parents shared stories about children who struggled in other programs due to special needs, often getting kicked out, but we welcomed them. Now, one of those kids is the captain of his rugby team. Others talked about how their children’s love of sports grew from our programs — they’re now passionate fans of teams like the Raptors and Leafs," shared Coach David.
The impact of Kids Play Sports is deeply felt in the Burlington community.
Families praise the organization for its unmatched ability to engage even the most hesitant or cautious children, helping them feel comfortable, valued and encouraged.
"Hearing about the success of kids we coached years ago, both as athletes and as young adults, is incredibly rewarding. Knowing we’ve not only had a sporting impact but also helped build their confidence and taught them about sportsmanship makes me really proud," said Coach David.
Coach David’s commitment to building community extends beyond his programs.
He has collaborated with local preschools, running multi-sport classes for young children and has organized free drop-in sports events in local parks, bringing families together to experience the joy of play.
"I love that my job involves playing dodgeball, seeing kids smile, laugh and have fun. It definitely beats a desk job any day," Coach David added.
Under his guidance, Kids Play Sports has become a cornerstone of the Burlington community.
Coach David’s leadership, the dedication of his coaching team and the positive impact on children and families make him a deserving recipient of the Community Builders Award in Sports and Recreation.
"We genuinely work very hard. I know some people might think we’re just playing dodgeball and hockey, but I always say, if everyone could work with kids they would, because it’s so rewarding. But it’s still hard work. We do it because we love it and it feels great to be recognized. Winning feels even better. From the bottom of my heart, thank you," shared Coach David.
The Sports and Recreation Award is presented to an individual or group who has contributed to the strength of a sport in the community, by way of inspiring people, establishing a program, mentoring a team or individual to extraordinary accomplishments or setting an example for others to carry.
Congratulations, Coach David!
